A good rule of thumb would be to use the name of the hiring manager if it’s available. Remember, the hiring manager is a human being with emotions. Don’t you feel nice when someone addresses you by your name? Similarly, the hiring manager will also feel nice when she sees her name on top. It will also motivate her to read further.
If you’re applying for a position in a company with an informal work culture, use the first name of the hiring manager. For a more formal setting, it would be better to use the last name of the recruiter or hiring manager.
