Expectations of some of the big bosses while hiring

Jeff Bezos. The billionaire Amazon founder is “very, very picky” while hiring. One of his mottos is that every time he hires someone, he or she should raise the bar for the next hire, so that the overall talent pool was always improving.

“The key for us, number one, has always been hiring very smart people,” Bill Gates said in an interview. He adds, “There is no way of getting around that in terms of IQ, you’ve got to be very elitist in picking the people who deserve to write software.”

Hyatt CEO and President Mark Hoplamazian, for one, looks for employees who align their jobs with their own sense of purpose. And Flywire CEO Mike Massaro assesses potential hires to see how well they fit with the rest of the team.

One of the most widely cited pieces of research on the topic is a 2004 paper, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, by Frank L Schmidt and John Hunter. They found that smarter people perform better at work, probably because they learn new skills more quickly.
