Should a resume be written in past or present tense?

Exceptional grammar skills can be the first step towards impressing your future employer. Choosing the right tense can be tough, especially when starting to write your resume. It is an individual style and preferences, but few guidelines can help in becoming a deciding factor.

Past Tense Resume Elements: When listing previous employment, extra-curricular activities, and volunteered positions every responsibility and accomplishments should be in the past tense.

Present Tense Resume Elements: Responsibilities that you still perform and are involved with your current employer, should be listed in the present tense.

Mixing Past and Present Tense: It is generally avoided to use both the tenses under one heading. The only exception is a current position for which you’re listing both accomplishments and responsibilities.
