Skills and Competencies: Which one has got the better of us?

In some ways, skills and competencies are similar. They both identify an ability that an individual has acquired, but the two concepts are not identical in terms of the function they perform.

Skills are more concerned with specifically learned activities while competencies help translate skills into on-the-job behaviors. In other words, skills are the “what” and competencies are the “how”.

Competencies define the requirements for success on the job in a broader sense, whereas skills are specific (so to speak).

As the brief overview makes it apparent, competencies underlie the effective application of skills. Despite this important difference, the recruitment process is rarely focused on competency. Job adverts are overly focused on particular skills and experience.

Very few hiring managers identify competencies that they’d like to see candidates bring and thereby add value to their company. This is because implementing a competency management system could be a complex task.

Few examples of competencies include integrity of character, intentional communication capacity, and emotional intelligence.

Now, it’s not hard to imagine why it’s difficult to rely on ‘competencies for recruitment. Skills are much easy and simple to define!
